As we approached the venue, there was a sea of people inside and outside. I had never encountered such an array of social cliques, ranging from your hipsters, gangsters, rave kids, as well as your neighborhood meat heads (the group of guys who usually care way to much about their appearance.) The band that was playing is called The Drums, and they're an alternative indie rock band, so this kind of crowd was very strange to see. The venue was so full, it felt like we were packed sardines.
People were fighting their way in and out, trying to get to the front of the stage or to the front of the bar. Once they started setting up, everyone started shifting forward, making it nearly impossible to move anywhere, and just my luck, I got stuck straight center. Most people would consider that the best spot, but I call it the danger zone. People push you forward, elbow you, and if a mosh pit is created there is no way out. Thankfully this crowd was so diverse that nothing too out of hand happened besides your average pushers here and there.
While being in the middle, I had the best view to people watch. Towards the font, there was a lot of space available, but there was a group of people dancing and twirling all over the place. People who tried to push their way up seemed to instantly regret it because they seemed afraid to get hit by the three guys dancing.
All three guys seemed to be Caucasian, well dressed and somewhat drunk. The were what people my age call "frat stars" - Nice button downs, khaki shorts, and Sperry shoes. The entire show, no one seemed to enjoy the concert as much as they did. They knew all the words to all the songs, and just danced as much as they could. Mostly everyone else was just nodding their heads or doing slight movements, considering there really wasn't any space to really dance to.
By the end, people became very friendly with one another considering there really wasn't any where else to go, but the security was circling like vultures. I'm assuming this was because they didn't want anyone to start fights, clearly there was alcohol involved all night and people were pushing one another from here and there.
The two artists from the band left the stage, and started greeting their fans. At this point, people were getting restless trying to meet their idols, pushing and taking selfies. Both artists seemed grateful for such a big crowd, that they didn't mind waiting around for the meet and greets. One girl in particular was about to have a heart attack because she was able to take a picture with both artists, and got her phone and a napkin signed. The rest of the night, this girl was going around the entire venue having a mental breakdown, and gloating to everyone she could get close to. She became so rowdy that security escorted her out. Because of this, The Drums gave her a special shout out and left the vicinity.
Overall, the vibe of the concert was a lot more peaceful and upbeat than most people thought.
