Awkward Silence

There are multiple people in this building, yet no one seems to be interacting. All you can here is the opening and closing of the door and people footsteps as they walk to their class. You can hear an occasional conversation but it ends quicker then quick. People rather look at their phones and pretend they are doing something instead of talking to the person next to them. I understand that it is awkward talking to someone you don’t know, but that’s how you make new friends. Mr. Jersey has not even moved an inch or looked up, what’s on his screen must be really important. He is extremely focused on his phone. Or it could be that he is avoiding someone who is in the building. Then we have Mr. Sunglasses hasn’t moved at all either, I came to find out he was asleep and was trying to hide it with his shades. We are all guilty of pretending to be on a phone call or replying to a text to avoid talking to someone we don’t want to. Its’ an awkward situation having to talk to someone who you just don’t want to talk to.
Here comes this young man Mr. Orange shorts. He looks like he is known by a few people. He actually was the own who broke the awkward silence in the building he started a conversation with someone he knew. Then, someone else heard them and knew Mr. Orange shorts and joined the conversation. All it took was one person to get a conversation going. The silence was broken and now you can hear people conversing. Curly hair is sitting up against the wall on top of her skate board. She is also on her phone, which is nothing new. She occasionally looks up as if she is waiting for someone she knows to walk in. Turns out she was. It seems like people aren’t really up for making new friends. They talk to the ones they know and that’s it. People rather just go do what they have to do and get out.   Oftentimes we will maybe crack a smile at someone out of politeness or say hi to a class mate. But, is it because they want to or because they are just being nice. Being a college kid and having a full plate on our hands makes it hard to have a social life. Maybe that is why so many people spend time on their phone so they can catch up with what others are doing and then go on about their day.
