high school basketball at the activity center
A high school basketball tournament taking place at the activity center, it was the start of the second half. At least they looked like high schoolers they seemed young to me so probably not varsity teams. After watching for a bit I definitely came to the conclusion that they are not varsity teams. Since no one out here could dunk a basketball. Most are jacking up three point shots and none of them are going in. Not very fun to watch if you ask me I was almost getting irritated at the poor shot selection and embarrassing defense being played. Seemed like most of the kids were wearing the latest Nike gear and shoes, also most had on matching socks. Except for a few maybe it was because they are less fortunate and can't afford that stuff or maybe they just didn't care. After a bit it's easy to tell whose parents are who's, since the player will always look to the stands after a play for confirmation, or the parents are yelling at them to do something with the ball when they have it. To me it seems the better players are less worried about their parents and only focused on the game, maybe their parents aren't even there, one kid stood out the most to me a bit taller than the rest but still a guard, he had a dark complexion a wiry lanky build and dark curly hair, a true killer on the basketball court and definitely carried his team to a solid victory probably scored 20+ points, I hope he plays in college because he was above the rest in skill and athleticism. After watching the coaches for a while it seemed the winning coach was always calm and collected just making sure to play all of his players while the losing coach was flustered and yelling out different things for his players to do constantly. The fans made the game exciting at the end in my opinion seemed that the losing team's players were mostly from Las Cruces because they had a lot of fans and it seemed the other team didn't really so I assumed they were from out of town, neither of the teams were representing local schools so I figured it was AAU or some kind of club basketball, but the losing team started getting close as they made a run while the kid I mentioned earlier was taking a breather. Although they were behind by more than 10 at one point but in my opinion the energy from the parents and others pushed the losing team to make a comeback and pull within 5 during the last 4 minutes. Every shot that was made the parents exploded with excitement, the kids on the losing team started playing harder defense and forced a turnover that swung the momentum in their favor. They missed the shot and the other team got the rebound. At that point the winning coach called a timeout and checked his best player back in. As I said before this kid was a killer, all the excitement and momentum the other team had attained was quickly silenced by him. Without wasting any time he got the ball and took it to the rim and scored, slicing through the defense without any hesitation. After he scored the team forced a bad shot and he came up with the rebound. The parents who were once so excited all looked shocked, a couple frail shouts from parents to pick up on defense was all that could be heard. Although the ball was in the best players hands and to him this game was decided. He walked up casually and shot a three with the defender right in his face. Swish, up by 10 with 1:00 left and this game was decided. The crowd silenced except for a few fans supporting the other team who started flipping out at the heroic play that was just made. After the game the players all shook hands and the parents went over to congratulate them all. It was a good atmosphere after the game, there seemed to be no bad blood between any of the players and even though the home team lost everyone looked to be proud of the way they played. I'm glad i stayed to watch since i was agitated about it at first but it ended up being pretty entertaining.
