Devicetopia

Being that it's a good place to sit to be able to watch people, I return to the same seat on the second floor of Corbett where I sat last week. I look to see around to see if those two friends are sitting in their spot. I don't see them. Maybe they only meet at that spot on certain days. There are many groups that are meeting, either as just a social meeting or to work on school work. There are two girls who are sitting to the right of me and one guy who is sitting to the left of me. From what I can hear, the two girls sitting next to me are having a conversation about an assignment that they are working on together. The guy on the other side of me is looking at his phone and has his earphones on. He must be here just to pass the time by until his next class. And of course, as I look around almost everyone is looking at an electronic device. Sometimes, it kind of bothers me how much time we spend on our phones or our computers. Just after these few weeks of watching people, I have become even more aware of the amount of time people devote to their devices. It has even made me realize that I spend a lot of time on my phone myself, way more time than I would like to. I have become more aware of it and hopefully I will get better at just putting my phone down and enjoy what's going on around me. I see a group of three friends on the other side of the room all on their phones. They say something to each other every once in awhile but all of their attention is focused on their phones. This is the one thing that bothers me the most about people and electronic devices. People are with their friends or family but they're not really spending time together because they're too interested in social media that they have access to from their devices. It's horrible to think about how little people personally interact with others nowadays because of all these devices. Sometimes I feel that people would have stronger relationships if we didn't have cellphones and computers. I know that they are beneficial for many things but they are also negative in many ways. After these weeks of watching people, I can't help but to focus my thoughts to the incredible amount of electronic devices that I see each time that I come to observe people. As I look around I notice that the two girls sitting next to me are no longer working on their class work but are showing things to each other on their phones. I guess cell phones can spark some conversations sometimes. But the cell phone is still the center of attention. Time to turn my attention to something else going on on the second floor of Corbett. I see many people using this time and place to eat their lunches. I also see a couple of people dozing off. Maybe they stayed up late studying since finals are coming up in just a couple of weeks. I can't believe that the semester is almost over. It went by so fast but yet not fast enough. The guy next to me just stood up and left; must be time for his next class. I just noticed the time and realized that I need to start hearing to my next class as well. Until next time, people of the second floor of Corbett.
