Today the students were pretty noisy and the teacher had to hush them constantly. They were back after a four day weekend and had to catch up on formations for the choreography. The male captain is teaching them the beginning of a new routing and as he tries to count to begin practicing, the students where interrupting him. The teacher made them do push ups until they calmed down.
Teaching the choreography was something new to the captains and they also learned about themselves. They may have made mistakes and although the students were whining, they carried on with the new formations for the choreography.
There were also second round auditions being carried out in the outside hall for two jumps that were in the dance, and included flexibility and strength. This required that students to be able to arch their backs and do a certain kind of jump. There were several students that were visual learners and they did not recognize the move when spoken. But, as soon as they saw their fellow dancers execute them, they were able to accomplish the audition. One student felt really insecure about the jumps and said that she would fail. To me, this is mentally preparing yourself for failure and setting a low standard for the teacher that was judging them. But, she did ask for help and promised that she would work on it. There was another student that was not here for the first round of auditions and she had to be taught the movement phrase. She learn it really quick, because it was only four steps and did pretty well.
Today, the teachers were really incorporated into the choreography and had to supervise that the captains were teaching correctly and that the time that they had in class was well used.
