I return on a cool and
humid evening to the small town plaza. I brush off the small droplets of rain
off the bench and I take a seat. Despite the chances of rain there are people
in the plaza. Beside me on the next bench, the Simpsons and their daughter
Kayla are sitting down. Kayla wants a drink from the water fountain but Mrs.
Simpson tells her the water fountain is dirty and doesn’t let her drink from it.
Kayla is whining now and jumping around Mrs. Simpson saying “I’m thirsty momma”.
Mrs. Simpson looks really annoyed and she then takes Kayla to get a drink from
the visibly dirty fountain. Mr. Simpson looks completely unaware of the
situation. He’s been looking down at his phone ever since I arrived. As I
observe the Simpsons, I see a middle aged couple leave the restaurant called
the Authentic Outpost down the street. They are holding themselves close
together and they walk towards the café at the corner of the street and sit
down to listen to the soft rock music. Like the last evening I came, people
clap after every song. The mosquitos are as vicious as last time. I am watching
a man sitting alone across the plaza attempting to the swat the mosquitos while
dialing someone on the phone. He seems to redial about 3 times and then gives
up. I continue to listen to the soft rock until I hear a woman behind me. There
is an elderly tourist couple, the Thompsons, attempting to take pictures of the
plaza. The woman complains that her camera sucks and her husband simply says “I
told you that you should have brought Becca’s camera”. The woman simply says “Oh
well at least you can see what it is”. They continue to walk until they disappear
inside a gift shop. I continue to battle off the mosquitos until I see a woman
walk up into the plaza. She walks up to the man that was dialing on his phone.
The man stands up, kisses her on the mouth, and they walk away from the plaza
into the Authentic Outpost restaurant. After about 5 minutes I begin to feel rain
droplets on my head. Almost as soon as it begins to rain I hear Kayla tell her
mom “momma it’s raining!” Her mom simply says “let’s go” and the family gets
up and they walk towards their SUV and get in. I am starting to get wet so I
also decide to leave. On the way back to my car I see an elderly woman standing
in front of the Virgin Mary statue. She looks at me briefly and then looks back
at the statue. It seems like she was praying despite the rain. I cross myself
as I walk past the church and finally escape the rain in my car.
