Soup Kitchen Smiles

Something that I love about being an athlete is that I have to participate in community service hours. I love being able to help the less fortunate and to put a smile on their face as they walk through. That is why I volunteered at the soup kitchen the other day. Spending five hours cooking and serving meals to the unfortunate really makes community service worth it.

When I first walked in to the building of the soup kitchen I noticed everyone was already working hard by cooking meals and cleaning the kitchen. Jennifer was the first one to help me by telling me to start out by peeling the potatoes. Jennifer and I started talking and I was given her life story. I love hearing about other peoples adventures in life and what they have to say about it all. Meeting and talking with Jennifer really had my day going with a great start.

By the time we were done cooking, the less fortunate started walking in. My heart started to break seeing all these people walk in and just knowing that they have been through a lot. Hearing Jim and Bob talk with a funny accent because they lost a lot of their teeth and seeing Billy in a wheel chair because he lost his legs really made me feel for them. I even ended seeing one guy with hair so matted that the only way to get the knots out would be to cut his hair off. I enjoyed being able to put a smile on their face, especially when they find out they were able to come back for seconds.
