Walmart Supercenter

For my first week of field notes I performed observations at Walmart, in El Paso. To accomplish this, I conducted my observation between times of 8:00am and 10:00am on Saturday September the fifth. I started sitting on a bench in the main entrance of Walmart, close to a soda machine. People are starting to get busy and I am cautiously observing how majority of them, including adults and elderly, are getting out of here with breakfast.  Already four out of four old men bought coffee from the McDonald’s inside Walmart. People from all ages are coming, but it caught my attention how in this time that I have been here, majority is old people. They buy at least about three to seven objects; including clothes, food, or anything else.  On the contrary, young people, women overall, come and leave this place with their cart full of groceries, bathroom stuff and even school material. I am assuming they are moms and have a place to take care of. Right now old men, wearing a Family Dollar t-shirt enter to Walmart. Not even more than 15 minutes had passed, when he was already way back to his car with a tennis shoe box in his hands. Then, this lady may be in her early 30’s, spend about an hour inside. She had her cart full of sodas, two packs of bottle water, bread, and a big gift bag. When all this happened, I start observing men and women instead of elderly and adults. Furthermore, I start noticing how majority of men could spend less than half an hour inside Walmart, when women spend more than an hour inside. After this, I decided to go in to the store and observe people perform their groceries, or the things they were supposed to do. Another fact I notice by doing this, was that majority of teenagers, were wearing their headphones, and not paying attention to what they were doing. About two out of five adults yelled, or made angry faces to their son because they were not listening. But at the same time, adults who were doing their groceries and keep watching to their phones constantly. In this case I understood that technology is becoming a way of living, people cannot be without looking at it and using it. While elderly is focus, gently and not willing to spend or have the time to use a cellphone according to what I heard. I was walking through the cereal hall; there was this old woman with light blue dress on, she was with a girl and a boy. One was playing angry birds, and it is funny how the girl is trying to take pictures of her. It is just amazing how people focus in what they need to do, or they like to without been aware of other people. The last thing I observe was that more or less about four out of seven people who were coming to shop, smiled at me. I liked to smile to everyone but not always do I received a smile back.
