Today the nicest thing happened. When I went to the counter to order my drink the barista said the person before paid for my drink. The woman in front of me didn't seem like she would pay a drink forward but she did and I was incredibly happy. I decided to do the same thing for the next person. Once I got my drink and sat down another person went to the counter and when he went to pay and received the news he broke out into a grin. This created a chain as I noticed the next person grin and follow suit. By the time I left the chain was still going and about 16 people and counting were paying it forward. It's interesting that people are so willing to do good things once it was already initiated; however, it was rare for someone to actually start the good deed. I think it may be the fact that this day in age we lost our ancient pack mentality and stared the mentality of having to fend for ourselves. When did we become so self centered? At what point in history did we go from pack to solidarity?
As I was sitting looking around I noticed the baristas where doing the stereotypical butchering of names. I heard "Ally-shah" "Too-nye" "Germ-mamy" and "Rebok-a." Why? Why do they do this? Maybe next time I will ask but it always makes me look into an imaginary camera with a pained face like in The Office TV show. I than notice George, the hipster I see almost every week, typing away at his lap top drinking his coffee like he does every time I see him. I still wonder what he does but I didn't ask this week. Along with the solidarity I already pointed out, 95% of people at the coffee shop were alone. Quietly drink liquid and watching Netflix or working on school work. Again, when did we get so alone?
