The Old Sun Shop

Fieldwork Week Seven

Today was quite the bipolar day with the weather. It was warm and it was cool. It stayed partly sunny but would rain pretty hard every now and then. The flow of people in the shop was very slow. However, there were a lot of people out in the plaza listening to the band play and looking at the booths set up outside. Whenever it would rain a few people would go inside the nearest shop, others had an umbrella or didn’t mind the rain.

The door was closed today and the same candle was burning. It was a smaller candle so the smell was not as strong. However people still noticed it and almost everyone complimented on how nice it smelled. Many went to take a look at the candles but had no takers today. It was the same with the pigs. Almost everyone saw them and liked them but none of them sold.

One of the few people that bought things today was an older lady. She was so sweet and took her time looking around the shop. She was wearing different shades of brown. She fell in love with the twirly bells we have (like wind chimes) and bought two of them. She decided she would give one away as a Christmas gift. Her challenge was deciding which one of the two she wanted to keep. She also bought two different sun catchers. One was a Christmas tree and the other were presents. She planned to give one to her daughter. She thought they were stunning and an extra something to decorate their homes with for Christmas. We carried on a small talk while she was in the shop. Her personality was so sweet and caring and also quite humorous. By the way she looked around and picked things out, I could tell that she really loves to shop. She even told me she should stop looking around the shop because if not she would just keep taking more and more things. After the purchase I put her neatly wrapped items in a bag and thanked her. She gave me such a warm smile and told me to have a wonderful day and left looking quite happy. It sure made my day to see someone so happy and being so kind and loving to everyone around her.

A few guys came in a bit later in the day. They were fascinated by the black pottery. One of the guys wearing a blue shirt and a black hat asked me what the pot was made of. I told him I wasn’t sure but that it felt like a certain kind of clay. He told me that he used to make a little bit of pottery but had never seen such beautiful black pottery. He believed that it was not clay. They quickly left the store cracking jokes amongst themselves. Since I’ve been getting asked frequently what the black pottery is made of, I plan to research and find out.

Near closing time the owner came in. She started talking about how none of her Christmas items will probably come in on time because they are all in back order. I showed her some cute Christmas things my mom and I could make meanwhile the other stuff comes in. She absolutely loved the ideas. One of those ideas she is excited to see are small Christmas tree’s made out of pinecones. Hopefully this can become one of our new top selling item for Christmas besides angels.
