In the Mood for Food

Yes folks, once again I’m at my field site ready to talk to you about all the interesting people dining along with me this evening.

Let me start with what it look like outside the restaurant; looking through the big glass windows on the east side of the building, the late evening traffic can be seen bustling. There is probably an hour of sunlight left in the day and a couple of pedestrians could be seen on the side walk.

Once seated at my table after ordering I observe two young ladies. Both seem to be around the age of twenty and both are of Hispanic descent. From now I’ll refer to them as Rosa and Rita. Rosa wore a red blouse with khaki skirt and Rita wore a black romper. What seemed very interesting was that Rosa spoke mostly Spanish and Rita would answer sometimes in Spanish but spoke mostly English. It was pretty remarkable the way Rita would interconvert between the two languages while conversing.

On the table to my left were three individuals, two males and one female. From what I could put together from the way they dressed and the motorcycles in the driveway, they were definitely bikers. Both guys seem to be around the same age. One guy is Caucasian and the other one is Hispanic. We’ll call them Elton and John respectively.  Lisa, the female along with them seem younger and is of Hispanic descent. They were eating tacos and drinking sodas. They spoke about recent road trips they went on and different parts on their bikes that needs fixing or parts they wanted to change. What was pretty interesting was that neither Elton nor John seemed to be acquainted with Lisa.

The drive thru didn’t seem as busy tonight though. I only counted about five cars for the entire hour and a half I was there. The restaurant was also pretty noisy tonight; everyone could be seen conversing with each other or on their phones. The cook was also at it in the kitchen you could clearly hear the pot spoon scraping on the pots and the sizzling of whatever dishes he was cooking.

Moving on to the table to my right I could see a young man who I’ve seen on campus before. He’s having an enchilada and a sprite as refreshment. I also noticed he was quite fond of his phone; he held it with his left hand and never placed it down while he ate with his right.

Mr. Regular from my first field visit is also here tonight. He is also busy texting on his phone. Occasionally while he waited for a text to come in he would converse with Wayne the waiter. I can’t seem to figure out what he’s eating but I see a glass bottle of coca cola on his table.

Rosa and Rita are about to leave. Both girls are walking over to the trash can to empty their plates. I seem to have no more business here also so I’m about to follow behind them.
