This week in the Multon Center the era of mid terms
continued to compel the atmosphere of study hall this week for many of the
student-athletes. The use of note cards, study guides from this year as well as
previous years continued to remain a constant theme. Any possible way to have
more knowledge of what might be on the midterms the student-athletes used it to
their advantage in order to maintain or boost their grades in their classes.
And for some students these midterms meant a lot to them as it could possible
hinder or benefit their chances of becoming Academic All-WAC.
Along with studying for midterms, came more judgment
from student-athletes, when other student-athletes decibel levels increased or
disturbed them. And naturally as humans when someone looks at us “cross” we
typically become more standoffish. Rather or not this continued on outside of
study hall is not to my knowledge, but tension as well as anxiety increased for
everyone, including the monitors. The monitors not only had to watch the
student-athletes in study hall but study for their own classes as well, with
the majority of them being graduate students or even undergraduate students
themselves.
With midterms slowly coming to an end pressure and tension
started thin out in the world of study hall, but anxiety was slowly building as
students waited and anticipated their grades and their standings in the class.
This time of the year was when students knew whether or not they could continue
in the class they are in, and if not they had to decide whether or not to drop
the class and take up a min-semester, in order to stay on track. And staying on
track was of the up most importance for student athletes, because they only had
5 years of eligibility to maintain their scholarships. SO for a majority of the
student-athletes time is of the essence and up most importance, because there
truly is no time to waist.
With Kinesiology being one of the more popular majors
amongst the student-athletes group work amongst those that shared this major as
well as other majors became a common way of studying effectively in study hall.
As well as encouragement amongst each other as they when in and waited on their
grades from these midterms they study for. This week in study hall was full of
anticipation, anxiety, and pressure amongst students as mid terms came to an
end.
