It was a rather boring visit at my field site today. Not much commotion surrounding me. I know a lot of students went home this weekend, so the campus was extremely empty.
One thing I have been noticing the past few weeks of doing field work is that there are a few families that come eat at this on-campus location. I would assume that this is due to the fact that the meals are cheap for an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Today I observed two women who I assume are friends. They each had one kid. The two women were sitting at the end of a long table, with their kids at their side. I was confused as to why the women chose this location to have their lunch together, seeing as there are plenty of options in Las Cruces. (All of them with better tasting food!) My best guess is that they chose this location for the cheap price, and the giant dessert table. The two women were both white females, both of which fit into the stereotype of the typical soccer mom. They wore sensible shoes with white socks, visors, and plain t shirts. The kids were very well-behaved, following their moms' orders instead of running all over the place. This is why I got the soccer mom vibe from them; it was obvious by their choice of outfit.
Other than the family I observed, the restaurant was very quiet. It was so quiet that there was the occasional awkward silence every ten minutes or so. It would fall so quiet that not a sound could be heard across the usually busting room. People would laugh at the silence because it was unusual to experience.
Overall, it was a very boring day for observing.
