Homework Places

Usually when I go to Zuhl Library between 6-9 in the evenings it is not very busy. I went twice last week and it was extremely busy! My conclusion was that everyone was studying and finishing up work for their midterms. Usually there are plenty of seats to choose from but this time, there were not many left.

I live off campus so I usually do my work at home. But I decided to try something new, and this way I got to get my homework done but also do some field work in the process. I noticed people sitting together working in pairs or groups studying and doing work for the same classes. I met up with my cousin so we could help each other with some homework. It was interesting to observe the different students that were working. I noticed a lot of athletes for NMSU getting their work done. Wearing Aggie Baseball, Football, and other Aggie shirts representing the school and their sport. I was also surprised with how many people were eating or snacking while they were working at the computers. For some reason I wasn’t sure if this was allowed. But I sat in a cubicle sort deal and could here the people next to be munching on chips. One guy was also singing to his iPod music which I thought wasn’t very appropriate for the library. It was louder in there than I would have thought.

I think most of the noise was just from people working together and helping each other out.

I also went to Corbett to work on some homework and to observe people. When I procrastinate on my work I tend to go to places where I can get easily distracted away from my work! Corbett was very interesting in the evening and not as busy as it is during the day. There were people constantly coming and going from Corbett and I just couldn’t help but think where they all were going and coming from. They have TV’s next to where Chick-Fil-A is and the soccer game was on between the USA and Honduras which I enjoyed because I would get up to check the score every now and then. There were a group of guys who were there watching the game and enjoying each others company. Mostly people were eating dinner or working on homework on their laptops.

At one point a large group of men and women (mostly in work-out clothes) came in and all ate at Chick-Fil-A or Taco Bell. I figured a practice of some sport or another must have ended and they were barely getting to eat dinner.

The most surprising and distracting thing was this pair a man and woman who went into Corbett with a stereo. They started playing jazz music and started ballroom dancing to it! I was trying to get my work done but they were too distracting and I didn’t know that they were even allowed to do that! Nonetheless I enjoyed it because they were playing good music. And it was also very brave of them to perform (in a sense) in front of everyone there!

Mostly it was just interesting to watch all the people coming and going from both places. And to observe if they were working alone, or if they were meeting someone. A lot of people I would see go to a place came, worked on something, and left within 30 minutes, which I wish I could finish my work that fast.
