No Food Allowed

Week 7:

It was a nice fall weathered Tuesday afternoon and the night was almost approaching. Before entering my field site this week I decided to get dinner first since I am there for numerous hours without food. As I walked in with food from a nearby deli I remembered that there were always “No Food Allowed” signs outside of all of the rooms that had computers. I walked in upset and confused because I thought I wouldn't be able to eat my food. But that’s when Braid Girl told me that if I kept walking and passed all of the group and single rooms with computers, there was one more room that I had not been in and could gladly eat my food there.

So I decided to follow the directions of Braid Girl because my food smelled delicious and there was no way I could have waited two hours just to eat it back at home. The farther I started walking down the halls the louder people’s voices became. And that’s when I came across not a single or group room, but Party Room at socialize hall.

Outside of the room there was a label on the wall that had named this room to be a classroom, and it definitely was the size of one. But the people inside this room had turned this classroom into their own personal party room. I walked in with my food and saw the many people also had food of their own. From a distance one would think that these athletes were having a potluck. There were also many more people to go along with the food.

Since this party room had no computers for people to work on, there was not one person doing work in this room. Before I thought that the socializing in the group rooms were bad, but the happenings in the party room were ten times worse. While I was quietly eating my sandwich, others next to me were either watching videos aloud on their phones, singing obnoxiously, or giggling at the people making stupid jokes. All in all, the atmosphere was completely different than the previous one on Sunday night.

After I had finished my dinner, I ventured around to one of the group rooms to see the difference from the party room. Although there was conversation going on, the party room had made the group room seem like a library. Even with the talking that goes on in the group rooms people are still able to get things done. Without Braid Girl showing me the party room I would not have appreciated the essence that the group rooms actually bring.
