Just A Smile

Around 8:10 this morning I couldn’t help but smile as I heard the Velasco couples laughter, it had been about two maybe three weeks since I had seen them at the coffee shop. I sat near them simply because I felt certain warmth just being around them. They are complete strangers but it’s the vibe that they give off that makes me wonder about them, they’re those kinds of people that with just a smile or the sound of their laughter that makes you smile.

A few minutes pass by and there is no sign of Linda, as I’m wondering where my favorite waitress is at a young girl comes over and introduces herself, “hi, my name is Lily, what can I get for you?” as she introduced herself I couldn’t help but notice that she was nervous, I smiled and asked her how long she had been working at the coffee shop and if she knew where Linda was. She nervously responded, “It’s actually my first day, I honestly don’t know exactly who Linda is but Mr. Boss Man has mentioned that she will be my superior.” When she said that it was her first day I couldn’t help but feel for her, I remember my first day waitressing and even though the restaurant wasn’t fully packed that day I still felt so nervous and anxious, so I knew exactly how she felt. I smiled and told her what I wanted; she then smiled and said, “I’m still trying to get a hang of the menu, so if I mess up your coffee please don’t tell on me.” I couldn’t help but laugh as she said that.

After a couple of minutes Lily comes back with my coffee, she then asks if she could get my opinion on it, surprisingly the coffee was really good. As I told her what I thought I laughed because she got all excited and said, “Yes! My first order was a complete success!” As I watched Lily waitress I noticed that she began to loosen up, she didn’t seem as nervous or anxious as she was when she first took my order. After waitressing on a couple of tables, she passes by my table and smiles at me, it was like a ‘thank you’ kind of smile. I couldn’t help but smile back.
