Southern New Mexico State Fair

Friday night a friend and I attended the Southern New Mexico State Fair. I try to attend the fair every year, since it gives me something to do on the weekends. I am always amazed at how many people attend the fair, because usually walking from place to place I am shoulder to shoulder with people. Friday, though, was not as packed as I would have expected it to be. It was nice to go to the Rodeo and get in free to the races.

The races were a very interesting experience. Most people were drinking, smoking or both and everyone seemed to be cheering or rooting for a certain car. My personal favorite was number 86 because the car was made to look like Chick Hicks from the Disney Pixar movie Cars. He was also in the lead, which helped me cheer for him even more. Everyone at the races seemed to enjoy their time there. I noticed the crowd would go crazy when a car passed another. Or if a car managed to pass two or three cars at once! But the crowd really went crazy when something dangerous happened! A lot of the cars ended up crashing into each other at certain times during the race. They would also get some other car to push a broken car out of the way which created more accidents, and made the crowd go wild! Or a car would get a flat tire, spin out of control and then some car from behind would just ram right into them! It was quite eventful, and the more dangerous a situation, the more the crowd became into the race

I also observed that people would go insane if they can get something free. The first free gift was seat cushions from Casa Nissan. Nothing really special, probably worth a dollar to purchase. The crowd would throw their hands up and even run to a certain spot in order to catch a free seat cushion. The second free gift were t-shirts with race cars on them which were pretty cool. This time, all hell broke loose. I mean, people were crazy for free t-shirts. One got thrown right to me, which I actually dropped and some guy grabbed it straight from my feet. I was annoyed because how desperate can you be just for a free t-shirt? Go to the store and buy one for $10.00!!! I think people need to learn and understand that if you can get something free, fine, if it comes strait to you, okay get it and enjoy it. But don’t be willing to completely loose your self-dignity over a free t-shirt. Like I said, if you really want one so bad go buy one or go up to the guy and ask him nicely for one! I mean they are giving them out for free.

It was interesting to see all the animals and all the cowboys and cowgirls who basically devote their life to taking care of farm animals. They are constantly feeding, cleaning, and washing their animals. I don’t think one realizes how hard working farmers are until you actually see them at work. I noticed that at the carnival side of the fair a lot of younger teenagers and kids were there riding rides with their friends. While at the races and even at the rodeo, there were older people and mostly men at the races. Which makes sense because more men like cars. A lot of little kids were checking out the animals and petting them, which I thought was very cool. Kids seem to enjoy petting every animal they can get their hands on. One cool thing that happened was this little boy probably about 4 years old pet a cow and it mooed at him! It actually mooed! It was hilarious! But it made the kid so happy and he even told his mom he wanted to pet all the rest of the cows and animals.

The experience was fun. Its always interesting and great to basically check out a whole new culture like the farmers, racers and competitors in the rodeo. I think even if people don’t enjoy farm animals or the rodeo, they should definitely check out the fair, they might just enjoy themselves!
