McDonald's in the A.M.

Friday one of my classes was cancelled so I figured I would grab a quick breakfast at McDonald’s before my next class. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was that they were extremely slow, surprising for a morning crowd. They only had one cashier working and after the cashier would take an order, she had to help get orders ready which took even longer. The majority of people eating and ordering were older people, probably retirees. After I got my food, I sat down close by a woman and her daughter. This woman had paper and binders everywhere and she was wearing a Denver Broncos shirt. I found this surprising since she was in and out of the kitchen like she worked there as a manager. She was making calls and I could quickly tell that they were short staffed because she kept asking people if they could come it right that second. Apparently this is why they were so slow, someone did not show up for work!

I also sat close by an older woman with two young girls probably around 7 or 8 years old. I know they did not have school Friday because my little brother attends public school and he was off for Fall Break. I figured the woman was either their grandparent or a babysitter because she was older and she clearly wasn’t in a hurry. They all were talking and taking their time eating and the woman was reading a newspaper. Unlike me, I was eating not slowly like they were, but faster as I had a class to attend! The woman asked the girls what they should do for the day and she kept making suggestions about going to the movies or a museum.

There was another older couple sitting towards the back near the bathroom of the restaurant. They seemed to not to want to be bothered since they were sitting far in the corner away from most people. What I also noticed was that they were both bundled up like it was 0 degrees outside! They were both in pants, jackets and beanies, which I found very strange since it was in the 80’s on Friday!

Though it wasn’t extremely busy, McDonald’s was still slower than they usually are. I find it interesting the things I notice about people when I am actually observing and paying attention to the things around me.
