Something to Yak About

With the trend of the new Yik Yak app, I have began noticing a difference in the amount of customers at my field site. The past few weeks, people go to this location to see who the gossip is about. Since people don't hesitate to call out others on the app, people have been dressing nicer than normal so they can flaunt themselves in hopes to get a positive yak from a kind, yet thirsty yakker. However, on weekends this trend does not apply. People of the Yik Yak community are more reserved, most likely due to the fact that people are not on campus on the weekend.

During my first week of field work, I observed a group of African American girls sitting together at a table laughing and dancing. Today I noticed the same group of girls sitting at the same table as last time. There was no dancing involved this time, but they were wearing similar clothes once again. I have made this observation about multiple groups before. People in the same group all tend to have coordinating outfits with each other. Since people like to hang out with others similar to them. Those who are in the same group must all have similar interests like clothes and sense of humor. Once again, the girls were not sitting with any boys, they were only among people of the same gender.

One thing I have noticed is that on weekends, the menu is limited to its options. Most likely, a majority of the workers do not work on the weekends, causing the number of choices in meals to decrease. Speaking from personal experience, the food is more fresh during the week. I think this is due to the fact that shipments of fresh food come every Monday, leaving the stale food to be eaten at the end of the week.
