The Happy Hour Chronicles: Hour 6, Happy Hour Strikes Back
Hey folks! Dr. Alan Coholic with you again! But please, just call me Al. It is another lovely Friday afternoon here at my local watering hole. It is a sunny and warm day with just a light breeze in the air. A perfect day for a pint or two it would seem, but traffic here is slower than normal. I would expect to see twice as many patrons on a day like to day than are present. Oh well, maybe business will pick up as the day progresses.
The table directly to the left of me is seating two women, mid to late 40's, and a man, early 50's. They are in business casual attire. They are having lunch and none are having any alcohol. This and their professional attire leads me to believe they all coworkers out for lunch. Their posture is relaxed and their conversation is quiet. They do have occasional bouts of laughter however. More evidence for their status as only just co workers is that they split the check at the end of the meal. I never saw any cell phone use.
There is a table of three guys in their mid 20's enjoying a few rounds of beers. They are dressed very casual and all have very relaxed postures. They all kicked back in their seats and speaking very animatedly in a foreign language. If I had to guess I would say they were Germans. Even though they were speaking another language it is easy to tell they are having a good time. There is a lot of laughing and smiling coming from their table. That may do in part with the beer they are drinking, but also I believe they are pretty good pals. They don't use their phones, and when it comes time to pay the tab at the end, they all split it.
A single man comes out to the patio followed by three boys. The man is in his 40's and the kids I suspect must be 12 or 13. They are all dressed casual, but since they are all wearing blue t shirts I suspect they might be part of a little league team and this man may be a coach. They get a table. The kids immediately take off across the patio and start using a putting green that is set up. The man takes a seat and pulls out his phone. The man browses on his phone for about ten or twenty mins all while the kids are working on their short game. A woman in her 40's joins the man at the table. She gives him a light peck on the cheek. Possibly a wife or girlfriend. The boys come back over to the table and the new arrival gives one of the boys a hug. The hug to boy and the kiss to the man leads me to believe this woman is connected to both the man and that child, therefore the man is probably the father of that particular kid. Since she only hugged the little boy my first impression was that maybe she was only dating the father so she is being kind to the boy, but she isn't showing him the affection his mother would. But I may be wrong on that. The three boys and the man and woman are on their phones often at the table, even after their lunch arrives. Their never seems to be much conversation except between the boys periodically. The man pays the lunch tab and the woman and the man with the boys leave separately since she give the man another quick peck on the cheek and another light hug to the boy she hugged earlier.
Unfortunately I was unable to get as much data as I do on my outings. I am not sure of the reason for this. But that's life right? Today was an interesting day as it was though. I was unable to track too many consistencies today. The coworker group and the Germans never pulled their phones out but the little league team had theirs out the entire time. I do think I was fairly accurate with my relationship assumptions however. I hope I have more exciting notes to bring you all next week!
Catch ya next time!
-Al
