The Wet Laptop

As always I enter the coffee shop and am greeted by one of the employees. This time I am greeted by the always indifferent employee, but this time she actually seems happy by smiling at me, which is nice for a change. Maybe something good happened to her today. I order a Chai Tea and sit down and get ready to type. Another new employee brings me my drink but she doesn’t say anything to me. I swear this is the best tea I’ve ever had in my life. It’s like Christmas in a cup! Anyway, as I look around there are not as nearly many people as there were last time. I’ve sat with my back against the wall, so I can see everybody. Next to me are two younger girls around my age studying for something, though not to thoroughly because they keep talking. On the other table next to me there is a girl sitting by herself studying with books scattered about on the table. On the sofa is a man with the beer advertisement on his shirt is reading a book. A man carrying a heavy looking backpack and other bags just entered the store and joined the two girls studying. Everything is calm when I hear, “Oh shit!!” I look at group of three to see that the boy that just joined them spilled his water all over one of the girl’s laptop.  He gets up immediately and runs across the room to get napkins. Her shocked friend just brings her hands to her mouth in disbelief. The girl is talking on the phone when the water was spilled and is acting rather calmly considering half of the laptop is soaked. Most of his cup of water is empty to show you how much spilt. He comes back with a bunch load of napkins and immediately starts soaking up the water. He takes the laptop to another table and is cleaning it the best it can. The laptop seems fine as it is still on. Laptop girl cleans the table from all the excess water. Water boy brings back the laptop and keeps apologizing. The laptop keeps on working… for now. Everybody is friends again as if nothing happened. Laptop girl turns off her computer and her friend’s starts to clean out all the holes used to plug in other appliances on the side. Water boy promises laptop girl that he will figure something out if the laptop does end up crashing. I mean that has to suck considering we are all poor college students. Now they are talking about the warranty and that it should cover the computer if it does crash. Everybody is rather calm now. Two older men just entered the store and order their drinks. They pay for their order and as they are walking away one of them drops their lid and asks for a new one. Another gentleman walked in and ordered a drink. He sits in the area where I struggled to complete this assignment two times ago. His order is taking rather long. The lone studying girl rather silent and hasn’t done much but continue her work. The beer shirt boy also continues to read. Neither of them even noticed the fiasco that just happened. NPR radio is still playing as it was all the other times I have been here. The water boy just made a comment to the shocked friend that she should take calculus in high school. I didn’t realize she was so much younger than the others. The laptop girls asks the boy if he could go to her car and get something. He gets up to leave and the girls start talking about what happened. I can’t make out everything they are saying but I hear Laptop girl say, “I’m not mad. Today is just not my day.” The shocked high school girl just laughs and says something I can’t understand. The water boy comes running back into the store and gives the girl what she needed. They soon after start to do the work they originally came to do. The lone girl is leaving and I myself need to leave. Until next time!
