For the first time in a few weeks, my field site was rather packed. There were very diverse groups of people. The restaurant was filled with fraternities, football players, and everything in between. One thing I noticed about this visit was the amount of people on their smart phones. This new behavior is due to the new app called Yik Yak. Students across campus post on this app anonymously, making it interesting to see what people are posting in your location. Today I noticed so many people laughing amongst their group of friends, looking around the restaurant to see who may have posted the "Yak."
Sitting at the table next to me was a group of fraternity brothers from Sigma Chi. One of the boys, I had seen around the campus for a while. I think it may have just been fate that we ended up at the same place. :) He was dressed very formally in a button up shirt and a tie, with khaki pants and sperry shoes. He had probably just come from a fraternity meeting, which is why he was dressed nicer than the rest of the people in the restaurant. However, the boys sitting at his table, also in Sigma Chi, were not dressed nearly as fancy. This tells me that the one, very attractive, well-dressed boy is a pledge for his fraternity, and the rest of them are older members. The fancy boy looked over at my table plenty of times, probably wondering why I was taking notes on his behavior. Whoops, looks like I got caught...
The restaurant was populated mostly by football players. Even though they are all part of the same team, I noticed how they have cliques within their group. Instead of sitting at one long table and being united, they were spread out in little groups of 3 or 4. Some would walk by each other to say hi, but for the most part, they were all very off to themselves. This separation must be due to tension on the team because of this week's loss against LSU. I would imagine that some of the players are disappointed in their teammates for not working as hard as some of the others.
The staff of the restaurant was busy decorating the ceilings with dangling pink ribbons. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, it only makes sense that the restaurant would be festively decorated for upcoming events. Overall, it was a very interesting night seeing how people acted with each other and the different groups at the restaurant.
