Phones and Injuries

It was another hot day, when the NMSU Aggies took the Field Sunday morning to play a soccer game.  The regulars (parents and some college students)  were already filled the stands when I walked into the complex.  However this time the stands where also filled with many high school girls, who were part of the same soccer team, which was evident because they all wore the same T-shirt.

The high school girls did not pay attention to game.  Most of the girls were on there phone or talking amongst each other instead of paying attention to the game.  Occasionally, the girls coach would comment or talk about the game and what is happening on the field.  At these moments, the girls would stop talking amongst each other and start paying attention to the field for a brief period. A couple of girls seemed to just fey attention, while others seem to genially pay attention.  I noticed the girls that sat closer to the coach payed attention to the game more closely and was on there phone less compared to the girls that were sat further away.

By observing these high school girls on there phones, I changed my attention to other people and there use of phones.  The 3 adult couples that sat behind, did not touch there phones during the game as far as I could tell.  The two middle aged women that sat in front of me were on there phones quite often during the game.  The general trend I observed that couples and men who sat alone hardly touched there phones, while women who sat by themselves or with other group of women used there phones often.  This was different when I compared these results to the college student that were at the game.  Both sexes of college students seemed to check there phones about the same amount.

During the game, there was a really bad injury on the field for the Aggies.  When the injury happened the crowd went silent and and there was a lot of talk and speculation about how the injury was caused.  The whole complex seemed generally concerned for the well being of the player that got injured.  The ambulance had to be called and she ended up being taken of the field by a stretcher.  The crowd was silent for about the first ten minutes the player was injured.  After 10 minutes the crowd started talking amongst themselves about things not pertaining to the game.  Once she was escorted off the field, the crowd clapped and there was a lot of talking wishing the player to get well. This ordeal lasted for 30 minutes.  When the injured player was off the field and out of sight, the play on the field resumed and the crowd went back to a regular state as if the injury did not happen.
