One Direction

I am about to turn 20 years old and on Friday I attended the One Direction concert in El Paso, Texas. Go ahead, judge me, I have no shame. In my defense I did not want to go, but it sounded like something fun to do on the weekend so why the heck not go and fan girl my face off for an evening?

My friend and I got to the concert about an hour late, which was fine because we just missed the opening band, which wasn't a big deal. We got to the concert at 8pm and One Direction didn't go on until 9! So I used this time to observe all the thousands of people in the stands.

I noticed that the age of concertgoers was anywhere between 7-60 years old (So I was not the oldest one there, just for the record). Many parents and grandparents attended with their little ones. Everyone was in a great mood probably because the main act was just minutes away from performing! Everyone was talking amongst themselves and I noticed about every 5 minutes or so the crowd of mostly 12 year old girls would screen their faces off, thinking they saw someone or something behind the stage. Many people were taking selfies and pictures of one another documenting probably the most exciting moment for them and their kids. In fact, there were so many selfless being taken my friend and I photo bombed about 5 different peoples pictures in front of us. I hope our faces end up on a Christmas card one day. Or at least in a random persons scrapbook of the One Direction concert!

I observed that the majority of concert goers had dark skin, probably from the Hispanic decent. I wandered how many people came into town for this show, other than the short commute from Las Cruces or Juarez. I was also looking around to see if I could recognize any one that I knew. I realized a friend from high school was sitting two rows in front of me!

The energy was insane and as we were waiting, music was playing. People were singing and dancing already to music being DJ’ed.  The song Macarena came on and literally the entire stadium was doing the Macarena. A part of the stadium broke into the wave and before I knew what was going on the entire stadium was doing the wave. I guess when a large group of people has an hour to waste; there is nothing better to do than the wave all together.

It was interesting to see the difference from kids faces and parent’s faces. The kids (mostly little girls) could not control themselves. They were all talking and could not hold still in their seats. Parents mostly had their poker faces on and looked like they mostly did not want to be there, which is understandable, especially for the dads, god bless the dads. It was also hilarious to see little girls crying from the amount of excitement they were going through. Emotions were definitely running high. And the thought of seeing Harry Styles in person was just too much for the crowd to handle! (Not me of course, I was completely in control of my emotions even though I was about to see Harry Styles).

Kids were also throwing huge fits for not getting nachos or not getting a One Direction t-shirt as a souvenir. It was more interesting to watch people purchasing souvenirs! There were some people spending hundreds on t-shirts and other memorabilia. I guess if you have the money and your kids want something why not spend hundreds on One Direction!

The experience was unlike any other. The crowd was loud, and pumped, and ready for some real boy band music. I think it is safe to say that everyone enjoyed his or her night at the Sun Bowl stadium with One Direction as the evening’s entertainment.
