Study Break
When I visited the local coffee shop this week, it was packed to the brim with college students hoarding the wi-fi to study and catch up on homework. This day was different than last week because the students looked haggard, maybe from the crazy weekend, but almost all of them had bags under their eyes, bed head, sweats and comfy clothes, and occasionally sunglasses. The students were also ordering coffee after coffee after coffee. Once I sat down with my laptop, I looked around at some of the books that were scattered across tables. What jumped out at me was that a majority of the male students had STEM books while a majority of the females had liberal arts type books. I wonder why that is, why females lean more towards arts and social while males lead more towards science and math. I ended up googling this question and discovered only one in seven engineers are women and only 27% of computer jobs are held by women. Is this because of the sigma of "Men are smarter than women" or more psychologic of women lean more towards the arts than sciences? I notice one guy had his books out, headphones in, and appeared to be studying; however, if you looked at his screen he was watching breaking bad on netflix. Maybe just a study break but he was watching it the whole time I was in the shop. When I went to the counter a few times to order I noticed another difference between men and women. Women were more likely to order the pumpkin spice/ carmel mocha/ and other sweet milk based drinks while most of the men ordered black coffee. The men also bought more of the pastries and sandwiches which surprised me. I didn't hear much gossip during the time I was there, most people kept to themselves today. There were only 2 study groups and the groups had 2-3 people each. I did notice how much people stop to check their phones though. One girl checked her phone every 3 minutes, just clicking it on and off looking for notifications, and every ten minutes she would actually pick it up and scroll through what I'm guessing was like facebook or instagram. Most people (though not as excessively) checked their phones frequently. It really shows our generations dependence on technology. Its a scary thought of what might happen if the cell towers and wifi went down for a day/week/month. The shop was really quite and I only could here the occasional murmurs. Maybe when it's a quieter weekend people will be more social on Sundays.
