Friday: In need of a cold drink!

It’s a hot sunny afternoon surprisingly because Las Cruces has bipolar weather. I park in the parking lot and walk my way over to the Barnes and Noble entrance. As I am walking it’s getting hotter and hotter so I speed up my walk when I finally reach the entrance.  As I am entering I am greeted my one of the Barnes and Noble employees, Zayn. The way I know that he is an employee is he is wearing a name tag that says employee with his name on it. He has blonde hair and is quite tall. I say hello and pass him by and work my way over to the Starbucks to get a cold drink.

As I approach the counter and I am greeted by a new employee. I have never seen her before from the time I been coming here to do my field work. She has short hair and is wearing glasses and her name is Shelby. She is wearing the green apron and asks me what I would like today. I order a venti passion tea lemonade because since I tried it last time is it now my favorite. Shelby is not alone she is with another employee, Carson, which I haven’t seen before as well. I grab my drink at the other side of the counter and have a seat at the same spot as I was the first time.

In the background I hear more up beat music now almost like hip-hop. I noticed that each time I come the music is calm and not so loud because of course customers here are trying to read their books or magazines. This time there is surprisingly more people in the book area than the Starbucks. My guess is that people come and order a drink here and then go get their favorite magazine or book and have a seat in the reading area. Most people here in the Starbucks have drinks and are just having a conversation with another person. They aren’t reading a book or magazine.

Next to me is sitting a young gentlemen, Greg. Greg seems to be in fancy attire with a blue dress shirt and black dress pants. He seems to be writing something or working on homework. He is very quiet and he doesn’t seem to pay attention to his surroundings because he is into his work. As I am watching Greg I notice that Shelby and Carson are having a loud conversation. Carson is talking about how his step son is going to turn 19 soon and how time is flying by. He also mentions that his mother is married to a military guy. He seems to be sharing personal things with Shelby and he doesn’t seems to care if the customers are hearing him. The conversation is soon cut short as a customer approaches the counter to order a drink. Shelby races to the register and Carson gets back to work by starting the drink that the customer ordered. As Shelby and Carson are getting busier I turn my head to the book area.

There is and older lady looking at calendars. She has her hair pulled back into a ponytail, which is good because it’s pretty hot outside. She grabs the calendar that she needs and heads to the register. As for me I start to gather my things as well to head out. I look one more time and Shelby and Carson are busier still making drinks and taking orders. Greg is still in the same spot but now he seems to be watching videos because I could hear some sort or noise coming from his table. I finish my drink and head out the door. Today was a good day.
