Midterms

This week in the Multon Center students continued to engage in their studies as expected, and with midterms underway, hours and studying were of the upmost importance for students this week. The influence and presents of study groups amongst student athletes was a common theme this week. The use of flashcards, the whiteboards in the study hall rooms, long overdrawn study guides, and online practice quizzes were in high demand this week. As students struggles to fill out the study guides given to them by each of their teachers, frustration began to become more noticeable amongst the students, which is where relying on one another for assistance became a huge factor for completion of the study guides. For many of the students these study guides had questions directly from their upcoming midterms, so it was of the up most importance that they were able to complete them, because they could potentially be holding the answers to their midterms in their hands without even realizing it.
Here at the University there is no set week for midterms for students, so for most of October midterms are being handed out for the entire month. So now these student athletes not only had to manage practice, treatment, and homework, they now had to manage the scheduling and the dates of upcoming midterms in multiple classes. Also midterms in many of the classes this semester included portfolios of work they have done so far this year in the classes, so now the stress of finding all these assignments was now a factor, especially for those who hadn’t been organizing theses given assignments from the beginning. Students who have had certain classes before offered their assistance to students new to each individual class, students who happened to grasp a certain subject better than other did the same, and the same went for the monitors of study hall.
This week by far happened to be the quietest and most productive week in study hall so far this year. The camaraderie that sometime can be question among the student athletes based on sports that they participated in had little to no factor this week. This is so because for the most part everyone had a common goal, and that was to do well on his or her midterms. This week in particular students happened to spend more time in study hall then necessary this week, in preparation for their midterms, and even those student athletes who didn’t need study hall took time out of their schedules to assist other students with studying for their midterms.
The use of educational games to study for midterms was also used this week. Student athletes paired up and teamed up on teams to exercise other methods of studying for the upcoming test of this week. Stress and teamwork were definitely a common factor this week in study hall at the Multon center, and for the month of October this theme will continue to be carried out.
