Sunday Funday

Sunday, October 12, 2014

It’s a breezy day at the pool today but the sun is still shining and warm on the skin. I sit on a lawn chair and next to me sits my friend. She lays her towel out on the chair before sitting down. There is a group of three girls in the hot tub. Just like us they want to enjoy the last weeks of warmth. To be fair you can’t really call it a hot tub. It should more appropriately be called the luke-warm tub. The three girls in the luke-warm tub converse about their endeavors from the night before. A bottle of beer in each hand, the girls sip while they converse.

One girl sits with her feet dangling in the water and the rest of her dry. She has blonde hair and big eyes. She wears Ralph Lauren Bikini, all black with the logo on the top. She has crystal studs in her ears that shine in the late afternoon sunlight. This blonde girl is telling her story of how the night before she was attending a party where the cops showed up at a very early hour of the night.

The second girl is sitting in the warm water. Her dark brown hair is wet and lays flat against her back. When the blonde girl finishes her story about the party Brown hair girl does not seem much interested in what her friend had to say. She immediately launches into a story about a boy named Josh and some sort of ridiculous tale of how he and his girlfriend broke up the night before. As she tells this story I notice she too has a bottle in her hand but an empty one sits on the ledge next to her as well. Completely uninterested in the story I do notice reoccurring words such as “like” from the story teller herself and the phrase “oh my god” from the third girl.

The third girl who hasn’t said much other than the repeated “oh my gosh” tells a very short story of her night and how she spent it watching reruns of The Walking Dead on Netflix. She has black hair and fair skin. She too has a bottle next to her on the ledge, however I notice that it is still almost full and she has not since taken any sips from the bottle.

As the three girls talk about their favorite series on Netflix a fourth girl walks through the gate and into the pool area. “OH MY GOD SARAH” the second girl with dark brown hair cries. She gets up and hugs her. The once dry white t-shirt is now a bit damp from the greeting from her friend. Fourth girl chuckles and says hi to her friend who’s name happens to be Beth. This girl Sarah tells her three hot tub friends of a gathering in her apartment, coincidently, for the night of the Walking Dead season premiere.

Excitedly the three girls gather their bottles, grab their towels from the picnic table and leave the vicinity. The place is now quiet except for the water in the water fountain. The sound of the rushing water is soothing sound in my ears. And I take the next 20 minutes to enjoy the sunlight.
