Dead Hall

Field Notes: Week 2

This week socialize hall was definitely not the same. I spent a total of 5 hours and 50 minutes here and the most shocking thing I saw were athletes actually doing homework like they were supposed to. So I thought to myself, either everyone saw my first post or last week was just a fluke. Whichever was the answer I still jotted down everything, even the most insignificant things, that I saw in what I’d like to call Dead Hall this week.

The weather on the day that I decided to go to Dead Hall was cloudy with rain sprinkling down from the sky. It was afternoon, almost the exact same time as the week before, but you could tell the atmosphere changed.

Backpack was still there to clock me in but silence had filled the entire building. Single room number one was occupied as usual, but general room number one was not only silent but completely empty. Slightly confused I checked general rooms number two and three but to my surprise they were empty as well. What was once socialize hall the week before was literally dead. So I got my stuff and sat in general room number one waiting for any sign of life to become apparent.

Two hours had passed from when I originally came, and the only thing that was different was that Blue Shirt had joined me in general room number one with a bag of ice on her shoulder. I couldn't tell what sport Blue Shirt had played for but she had come into the room and went straight to an open computer to do her homework. You could hear crickets in the room from how quiet everything was, but that all changed when Girl Team decided to invade general room number one.

Girl Team started to engage in gossip hour and Socialize Hall had come back to life. General room number one became lively and noisy like I knew it to be from the prior week. Then things were getting a little too boisterous so Suit Man had to come in and check to see if anyone was actually getting work done. Suit Man “scolded” Girl Team and his sarcastic yet sincere personality was actually pretty effective. As soon as Suit Man had left the room, Girl Team finished their conversation and then started to do their homework. A calm went over the room again, and Dead Hall prevailed over socialize hall this gloomy and uneventful afternoon.
