Wi-Fi and Music

As I drive up to the Coffee Shop, there are groups of people outside the frozen yogurt place down the way. It is obvious that they are not there to study, but to hang out. Maybe taking a break from studying themselves.

The Coffee Shop has more people than last time. There are only two familiar faces, John and an Asian student, Lee. Jimmy and Miss Doctor are noticeably absent as I take my tea and sit at one of the tall tables in the main area of the room. Joy has been replaced by a man with a buzzed, military style, haircut and glasses. Techno style music beats out of the speakers. Most of the patrons are students, just like last time

Ten, a majority of patrons, have computers. Two of the computer wielding students are working together on what looks like programming homework. Maybe they are electrical engineers or gaming programmers.

The music takes on an elevator music tone. Honestly, it is annoying.

I think John is a business major. He has pulled out what is possible a business book. Not being a business major myself, I cannot honestly say for sure.

Listening to this music, I highly doubt the students come here for the music. It must be the free Wi-Fi. Internet has become such an integral part of student’s lives that we do not do well when we have to be tethered to the wall by a cord. Wi-Fi lets student’s, myself included, do their homework from anywhere they can get a signal. If my phone was not dying, I would do as a lady near me is doing and listen to my music on my phone. Six of the fourteen of us have their own headphones in.

No one is talking, giving the impression that they wish to focus on their various forms of schoolwork. Though, I think the girl by the door behind me is done. She sits at the table Miss Doctor sat at last time.

Two more enter the shop. I believe one is Jimmy. He has the same bag as jimmy had last week. With three of the patrons being here again at this same time, I can only assume that it is for maybe some peace they get. Also, seeing these three familiar faces, it only further proves that students come here often and I seriously believe that it is for the free Wi-Fi. I would do the same in their position.

As I sit here, I cannot help but wonder how these students change come game-day. Do they ignore the game and skip it? Or do they take a much needed break and go and have some fun?
The music has changed from the elevator like sounds to something more tolerable. Some talk comes from some patrons in front of the fireplace/heater. As I return to the counter to get a snack, I see a study group at the bar, American History or Literature based on their book.

Conversation comes from the table to my rights. The girl that sits there is joined by a friend as I leave. As I cross the street to my apartment, the group in front of the yogurt shop is still there. Students hurry through the night back to their dorm rooms or to meet a study group from late night classes and the gym. Some are going home, not living on campus like I do. Still I wonder, how much do students change come Game Day?
