The Coffee Shop and the Student

A slow night at the Coffee Shop. But it is also quiet. Students, including myself, sit alone or in small groups doing school work or relaxing. The ones relaxing sit in the comfy chairs where the lit is dim compared to the one above me. Two people behind me are in comfy chairs but seem to be doing school work.

Outside, conversations take place in the summer air, welcomingly cool. Across from me, two male student, Jimmy and John, sit and do homework. They don’t say anything, just work. Behind me and to my right is another student, Miss Doctor. I assume she is a medical student of some sort by the title of her book. Do all medical students study alone?

Four of the students, Miss Doctor, Jimmy, John, and Viet who sits in front of me, listen to their own music, blocking out the music, sounds like a soft pop type of music, coming from the speakers of the small shop. One man, Purple Shirt, has been here for a while as he has gone back to the register to refill his drink. Another student sits at the bar and reads in their soft light. Behind the counter, Joy interacts with her customers, particularly Purple Shirt in this instance. Does she know Purple Shirt? Does he come in here often? Is Joy also a student?

Joy is a student. She is an animal science major which I found out as she asks another customer about her major and is asked about her own. Animal science. That is a really good major to go into. That’s how we find out more about ourselves as a human race sometimes.

I wonder if students come here for the free wi-fi. That seems to be why Mr. Basketball is here, along for the coffee. A look outside the window suggests that the Coffee Shop’s outside patrons have left.

Jimmy seems to be done with his homework. John is still reading. But he looks tired. Jimmy has decided to leave, done with his work for now.

Two cheerleaders, I assume from their black shirts with their school logo on them, walk in. They must be waiting for someone since they sit in chairs near the electric fireplace in front of the counter. They don’t order anything. They might later though. Bar student has left and the cheerleaders have gotten a call. They step outside. A co-worker, Red, joins Joy behind the counter and begins taking orders. Miss Doctor prepares to leave, done with her tedious reading for the time being.

As the hour grows later, more people, students mostly, come into the Coffee Shop. A small hum of conversation from two female patrons waiting, a student on his phone, and a couple of students off to the side of me, but lower than the music from the speakers.

A father and his small child take up a space by the window and share a sweet treat. Father-Son bonding. The cheerleaders have returned and ordered themselves something. As I sit here, I can’t help but wonder if I will see the same students here next time. It seems this is a favorite place for us to hang out and study. It’s also a place where strangers meet for the briefest of moments. A place where old friends meet. Now, only Purple Shirt, Jimmy, Viet, and the student on the phone are the only ones that remain of the people that were here before me.
