Game Build Up

This week in the Multon Center students were filled with excitement for the New Mexico State University vs. University of New Mexico game. All you heard was chatter about who was going to win, what time tailgating was going to start. Girls talked about what they were going to wear and all the students talked about what they were going to do afterwards. Anticipation was set high for this rivalry game of I-25, and students appeared to be more focused on getting their work done this week while still managing to maintain conversation over the games. This in state rivalry was enabling to students to get their work done so their weekend could be essentially free to enjoy the company of their friends, and the festive activities that were occurring through out the week. Students were hyped more male athletes were even in the Multon Center trying to accomplish their work, and for the most part the boy to girl ration was more even then it had ever been.
In this third week of fieldwork I noticed a particular increase in the amount of redshirt football students that were in the Multon Center, as well as those who were actually participating in the game. Music while studying even became more of a factor this week in the Multon Center. As you walked from room to room different genres and songs were playing. Girls were playing more emotional and calming music, where as boys were more so listening to rap and faster pace music.
This week there was also an increase in the amount of student athletes in the Multon Center making up hours due to the fact that they did not complete all of their hours the week before. These student athletes generally were on their first warning of the years, and had the option of either:
1.     Making up their hours this week including the mandatory hours for this week plus go to practice
2.     Making up their hours including the mandatory hours, and going to practice at a later date, or
3.     Going to practice while doing the standard hours at practice, and doing extra work at practice such as suicides, or whatever was up to the coaches discretion.
And with so many students wanting to attend the game this weekend, the urgency of now was of the up most important for not only their sake, but their social activities for this upcoming weekend. As the days came closer to the big game the number of students in the Multon Center also increased.
Each week the advisors, the monitors, and the athletic directors check more and more on the students to make sure their work was getting done, and with music being more of influence this week noise regulation was also a factor. The week was coming to an end and so were the opportunities to complete the necessary hours for the week. The stress was increasing and time was running out.
