Rain Rain Go Away

It is Friday evening at the NMSU Duck Pond. The sun is starting to set and you can see the horizon sky start to turn orange. The clouds have now cleared up from these past few days of non-stop rain. The weather is excellent short sleeve weather, its not cold or hot and not windy either. It feels great being able to sit outside after having everything wet all week.

There is a family on the edge of the water having a picnic. It’s the two parents with four kids, two boys and two girls. I can’t tell what they are eating but they are sitting on blankets on the ground. The kids are happily laughing and feeding the ducks. They begin to pack up their things and leave soon after sunset.

There are two people sitting under a tree on a bench on the other side of the pond. It seems like they are a young couple. They just sit there and appear to be talking and hug occasionally.

There is a man fishing by the side of the bridge. After a few minutes another fisherman who shows up joins him and it appears as if they know each other. By this time it is a bit dark and I can see them shining flashlights into the water. One of them seems to be pointing things out to the other one.

Off in the distance you can hear loud music playing. It seems to be coming from the area of the Aggie Memorial Stadium. After a while of listening I learn it has something to do with the football game going on tomorrow. The aggie fight song is played several times and the lobos are also mentioned quite a bit. After a while you start to see students heading that way. Some of them are dressed up while others are just going in their normal clothes. The majority is traveling in small groups but occasionally you see some going alone. As the evening progresses the amount of students going increases as more and more groups go by. Occasionally you see a few students come back and a few stop and talk with the men fishing and say it’s boring.

As I was expecting it seems like the construction going on has progressed a bit more. It seems like not a lot was done this week, the only difference I see is taller piles of dirt. It takes me a while to realize but I suspect it might be due to the rain this week.

Two people show up and sit on a table on the side of the water. They are carrying large cups and bags as well. Since it is dark I can’t see too well but I believe the bags are paper bags from a fast food restaurant.  They stay for a short while, just long enough to eat their dinner and then leave.

A crew of four workers shows up and starts working on something on the grass. You can hear them hammering stakes into the ground and taking down poles from a truck. They quickly assemble a pyramid type structure on the ground and leave. I’m unsure if they are done for the day or forgot some parts. I can tell they haven’t finished cause there is still poles spread out around the ground. It seems like it might be some type of canopy or structure to provide shade.  By then it is time for me to leave and I don’t see the crew finish their work.
