The Big Game

Today was the day; today was the day of the NMSU/UNM football game. It is without a doubt one of the greatest games to watch for an Aggie or Lobo. We go there to tailgate, talk trash to the Lobo fans, and watch the game unfold. It will be my second time watching the game, so this should be fun.

I showed up to the game 8 minutes after the start of the game. The stadium was packed full of Aggie fans and Lobo fans, and it was very loud. As I walked to the entrance, I heard a group of frat boys from NMSU chanting, “F**k the Lobos!” My first thought was that they were drunk, so it wouldn’t be too bad. After I handed the staff members my I.D. to enter the game, I walked in to see many Aggie and Lobo fans walking around chanting. I was just searching around for a few friends to hang out with. And fortunately, I found a few. They were all wearing their NMSU gear from shirts to hats like mine. And there was also 2 Lobo fans with their gear on too.

The Lobos were the first to score, making the game 7-0 on a touchdown. It should have actually been the Aggies who scored, but the quarterback threw an interception. When the interception happened, the Aggie fans were angry and yelling. The anger and yelling got worse when the Lobos scored the touchdown. As for the Lobo fans, they cheered and chanting things like, “F**k the Aggies!” and “Everyone’s a Lobo!” One of the Lobo fans even had a bullhorn, blowing into it constantly.

After the Lobos kicked the ball over, I saw that there was a dog running on the field. He appeared to be retrieving the kicking tee for the team. As the Aggies had the ball, they drove the ball down the field. For every first down, the Aggies cheered and the radio announcer yelled, “First down, Aggies!” And then finally, the Aggies scored the touchdown to tie the game. When they did, the entire stadium got extremely loud.

This went on for a while. The Lobos scored to take the lead, the Aggies scored to tie the game. And then, it went into halftime with the Lobos leading 21-14. The halftime show consisted of the Lobo marching band playing first. They were named “The Spirit of New Mexico.” The Lobo fans cheered while the Aggie fans booed. After 5 or 10 minutes of having conversations with friends about the game, it was time for the Aggie marching band, or “The Pride of New Mexico” to come out and play. The band played songs by the band Queen. And the whole time, the Aggie fans cheered and the Lobo fans booed.

After the halftime show, the third quarter began. It was back to chanting on and on about how the Lobos sucked. The Aggies scored a touchdown to tie the game, and now it seemed like it was in the Aggies’ momentum. After the ball got kicked to the Lobos, the Lobos drove down the field, but could not get a touchdown. So, they settled for a field goal, making the game 24-21. The ball got kicked back to the Aggies, and instead of a tie, they took the lead with a touchdown, making it 28-24 now. It was the first time the Aggies led the game. The stadium was much louder than it was before now.

The 4th quarter started. A few Aggie fans were actually leaving, even though the team was leading. I’m not sure if it was because they had something to do instead or because they knew we’d lose. But they must have known because as soon as they left, the Lobos took the lead with a touchdown, making it 31-28. Once again, the game was back and forth. It was intense. And no surprise, the Aggies drove down the field for another touchdown. And there was only a few minutes left. The Lobos still had time to make a comeback. Now, the stadium was at its peak in volume. Everyone was yelling, screaming, chanting. The Lobos now had the ball, ready to make the comeback. The Lobos continued to drive the ball down the field, with each play being louder than the next. Until finally, with 32 seconds left, the Lobos scored the touchdown to take the lead. The Lobos fans yelled in victory! But it was not over. There was still time. Unfortunately, the Aggies did not make it in time, and the team lost. Lobos fans were happy now, chanting and jumping in joy. It was indeed a very good game.
