It's a cool and breezy Wednesday evening, as I walk to one of my favorite benches outside of my go to coffee shop. Eagerness and excitement fill my heart as I sit down, not only because its one of my favorite places to be but because on this occasion, I have brought a Padron 1964 anniversary cigar to partake with my medium roast coffee that I have just finished purchasing here at the shop.
As I light up my cigar, I begin to observe my surroundings more closely. I have the perfect outlook and view of all the happenings inside of the coffee shop but also on the patio, hence, the reason why this has always been my favorite seat at the shop. The coffee shop is busy this evening, with people of all ages sitting inside the shop as well as sitting in the small patio. The bench where I am sitting is just on the inside of the patio.
Some time has passed as I have taken a few long delicious draws from my premium cigar and now my coffee cup is only half full, I have observed a few interesting things. Sitting from my corner "creeper" observation post, I have seen many people come in and out but most have stayed which hasn't left much room in the coffee shop premise. I've noticed that most people who seemed to have just come in for a quick caffeine pick me up have detoured their original mission once they saw a friend or colleague. Striking up conversation about the last time they saw one another or how it had been since they had gone out with other friends and had a good time. Other conversations were quickly about the weather or the beverage of choice on this particular visit. I found that whether the patrons were young or old the conversations were mixed, young or old patrons would discuss the weather, class, or work. The conversations of the elderly didn't seem to be about the weather or the last endeavor with one another more than the young patrons discussing class or what they were up to lately. Old would talk about such things just as the young would, this was very interesting for me to hear and discover.
Yet, other customers that would stride into the busy coffee shop would quickly order and grab their beverage and go. I also observed that beverage choice didn't seem to be affected by age or gender or sort of thing. It was a very diverse customer group this evening but all seemed interested in only one beverage choice and that was plain good coffee, with lots of caffeine and bold flavor profile. I noticed all ordered either medium roast as I had or had ordered dark roasts. Of course I wouldn't know the order of the customers that had already taken their seats with their beverage choice but from what orders I did happen to hear all were medium roasts and above, this will be something interesting to see if this changes in weeks to come.
As I drank my last drop of "joe" and took one last, long, delicious draw from the Padron cigar, I realized how much time had past and that this would conclude my evenings observation. By this point the coffee shop was starting to die down as it was getting closer to closing time for the little coffee shop. The evening I noticed was starting to chill quite quickly reminding me that summer was coming to an end and autumn was quickly approaching.
