It’s 1:13 pm and the cafeteria is still serving breakfast. The only lunch item being served is a burger, and everyone seems to be eating one. I don’t blame them, the hash browns I’m eating remind me of hospital food.
There seems to be more males here than females. The bigger groups consist of all males and there are a few tables with only a couple females. Almost every girl is wearing sweats/pajamas, probably due to the overcast and it being a Sunday. I’m wearing sweats as well. The topic of discussion amongst most the big groups of males is the UTEP vs. NMSU game last night. With NMSU losing, a lot of critiquing is going on.
The table sitting to the right of me consists of 4 males. One of them is the same guy who wore the blue jumpsuit from last week. He’s the loudest one in the area and looks older than his friends. All of them are eating burgers, the only lunch cuisine they’re serving. He laughs at nearly everything he says, definitely someone I wouldn’t get along with.
A girl just walked by wearing camouflage yoga pants and a shirt that says “#MERICA”. Another person I probably wouldn’t get along with. She had a plate full of scrambled eggs, my least favorite food.
The table in front of me consists of two volleyball players. They’re shirts give it away. They are quiet and laughing to each other as they eat. They have omelets. I overheard earlier that the omelet bar took forever, I wonder how long they have been here prior to my arrival. A boy in a blue collared shirt carrying a plate with a burger on it just sat with them.
Blue Jumpsuit is talking badly about someone he and his friends know. Everyone’s laughing with him too, adding to his already pompous ego.
A short girl in a green shirt sat beside the volleyball players and the blue collared boy. She too has a burger. The four of them talk quietly compared to the girl in the camouflage yoga pants and Blue Jumpsuit.
The difference between this week and last week is that there are less people sitting by themselves. This is probably because people are not dropping by on they’re thirty minute break in between classes.
Much like last week, the groups of people are still mostly based on gender/ethnicity, social constructs.
A man just walked by with a plate full of hash browns. I feel bad for when he sits down to eat them, they’re sorely disappointing.
I’m also noticing the popularity with chocolate milk today. It must be a new addition.
As I look around, many of the people talking in their groups have their mouths full of food. The comfortability of being with friends must make manners less important. I’m guilty of this table-side sin as well.
Blue Jumpsuit is bragging about partying with girls. The way he describes women gives me the idea that he’s misogynistic. He has a very skewed idea of genders and their roles in society.
Another thing I’ve noticed amongst the female population here is that most of them have their hair up in a messy bun. Sunday afternoon’s are most definitely lazy days. My hair is in a bun today as well.
Speaking of lazy, breakfast is still being served as the clock nears 2 pm. I haven’t spotted those very busy workers today either. Sweeping tables left and right last week, the cafeteria seems far more empty without their presence.
Blue Jumpsuit and his friends have finished eating. They’re enjoying their afternoons though, still talking loudly and laughing at inappropriate jokes.
4/5 people seem to cups filled to the brim of chocolate milk. I wish I could have some, it’s a shame my lactose intolerance prohibits me from it.
There is one guy sitting in a huge booth alone, eating burger and chocolate milk. I wonder why he chose to sit at such a large table. Maybe he’s waiting for his friends to join him.
Compared to last Friday, there is a lot less going on today. Most of the people who were here upon my arrival are still here, almost an hour later. Blue Jumpsuit just got his third course, I don’t think I can sit through him talking with a mouth full of food for another thirty minutes. Until next time.
