Wow it's really cold. I am not sure I'm interested in going out to watch Insvrgence tonight. Granted, I have no choice as I will be shooting myself in the foot if I don't. Off I go.
Tonight Insvrgence, Triumph Over Shipwreck, along with other various bands are playing tonight and the turn out is expected to be decent. I even saw fliers on campus for it. I decide to show up roughly thirty minutes after showtime as I assume the venue will be cold and bands will not be playing yet. It turns out that I am right. Still as I show up late, the venue is patchy with people, but flooded with cold biting air. This better be good.
I notice that because these bands are a lot more known, they are selling merchandise towards the back of the room. Three tables are lined up all clothed in chicken scratch designed t-shirts. I head towards a table to take a look at whats being sold when suddenly I am interrupted by the garish odor of an empty pizza box, Mcdonalds, and girl scout cookies. It was not long before I found myself back on the other side of the room standing next to the promoter Nick. He looks ready to begin, excited, and nervous. I see on the west side of the room someone marking the hands of guests paying to get in. More and more people are coming through.
I too am hoping tonight is a decent turn out mainly because massive amounts of male bodies tend to generate plenty of heat in this environment. I see many unfamiliar faces and some regulars. Things appear to be running smoothly.
As each band plays, the usually friendly shoving takes place. Circle pits manage to heat up the room slightly. I find myself standing with a small cluster of people in between each set of bands playing. Though I did not converse with them, it was interesting to hear how they interact with one another. I hear lots of offensive friendly jokes. It appears that males interact in ways that are very different than females. I hear a comment "I didn't know you had friends" be exchanged from Cade to Nick but their expressions reveal smirks on their faces and reassure me it's not at all serious.
I am sure it must be the cold but once the 5th band plays, one of our Las Cruces locals, I tiredly sneak behind the left over crowd of kids and head out the door to my car.
