Week Ten
This last week was very cold, and
as a result many people were bundled up. It was interesting to see people
handle the cold. In some parts the U.S. at this time there is snowing falling.
Here in the sunny city of Las Cruces whenever the weather drops below 60
degrees there is panic in the streets accompanied by rioting screaming people. Last
week was no exception. There was one couple in particular at the pond that was
of college age. They were clearly in a fight, and the weather was not helping
the situation. The girl was dressed up in a winter coat, scarf, hat, and
gloves. Mind you it was only 5 pm on a weekday night. The young man was dressed
in a jacket and a hat. They were fighting about something seemingly important
and the girl was screaming about how she didn’t want to be with him anymore. It
was most dramatic, especially for such a public place.
There was also a young college girl
walking about four dogs. They dogs seemed beside themselves with happiness. The
girl on the other hand looked very unhappy. I wondered if this was a paid job,
or perhaps she really had that many dogs. The girl was dressed up in a warm
weather sport jacket with a hat and gloves. Her face seemed red and unhappy.
There was one older gentleman that
seemed very happy compared to these fellow citizens. The old man was sitting in
a lawn chair fishing and enjoying life. He did not have a jacket, he was in a t-shirt
and jeans. The weather didn’t seem to bother him, and in face he seemed to
enjoy it. It was peaceful for him. After he was done fishing he got up and
packed his stuff. As he drove away I noticed his license plate said Colorado.
He was probably very used to the cold.
It is interesting how physically environment
can effect mood and attitudes. I’m not saying that these other people were
unhappy because of the weather, but the weather definitely didn’t help. The
older man seemed not to be greatly affected, and acted the same as he always
would have. The couple and the dog runner seemed unhappy because of outside
sources, but the cold weather and chill wind did nothing to help their disposition.
