Observing the Observer

As I walked into the coffee shop I noticed a guy sitting across the room, he had his full attention on this girl who was sitting just a few tables away from him. After ordering some coffee I turned to look at her, she looked familiar, she was really pretty. A couple minutes pass by and as I observe her I notice that her full attention was on her book; she was completely unaware of what was going on around her, at this point I doubt that she had noticed that there was a guy sitting a few tables away from her just staring. At first I thought it was a little creepy, but after observing them both for a couple of minutes I noticed that he wasn’t just staring at her to be creepy but that he too was observing her.

As Linda goes over to check up on him, he quickly turns his attention to the menu then to his drink, it was as if he didn’t want her to notice that he was just observing the girl sitting a few tables away from him. As soon as Linda walked away he turned to look at her, I began to wonder if he knew her, or had she just captivated him? All she did was take a couple of sips of her drink and turn the pages of her book, completely oblivious to the situation.

For about ten minutes it was the same thing, and then she turned the page, a few seconds later she laughed. I quickly turned to look at him; he was smiling as she was laughing. It was the first time I saw him smile; she read a couple of pages more then called Linda over for the check. I thought that maybe he would go over and talk to her, as she got her stuff and put her book away I noticed that he just looked down at the table. The smile on his face faded as she walked away, I didn’t understand, he had been watching her the entire time. He remained motionless as she walked out of the coffee shop, by the way that he had been staring at her the entire time I thought that maybe he would’ve made a move. Minutes later he asked for the check, as he got up he turned to the table where she had been sitting then looked down and walked away.
