Every week I visit my site multiple times and observe all
different kinds of student athletes. Over the course of the time that I've
spent here I have began to notice how “socialize hall” isn't just for them to get
homework done, but is a place for them to connect with other athletes that they
probably normally wouldn't. I usually observe and write about how much people
are talking when they should be doing work, but this week I thought that I should
also recognize the other side of social hall.
The first
day that I visited my site it was earlier than I usually go. There were a
limited amount of people there and they all still decided to go into the quiet
single rooms. Every individual was hard at work in trying to accomplish
finishing their studies and work for the day. I also began to notice how some
people in the single rooms were listening to music while studying. The music
noise level was at a minimum so I assumed that it was just personal to each individual
and might have helped them focus. After observing the few people I myself decided
to reenact what I saw everyone else doing in the single rooms. Being in the
room with my own music was in itself very relaxing and I actually got an amount
of work done that I haven’t in all the times that I've been here.
The next
day I came to the site at the time that I usually go, mid afternoon with night
approaching. I’m not sure if it is because finals are coming soon, but every
room that I went in contained hard working individuals. The first room that I went
into was occupied by at least two different teams. At a first glance it seemed
like they were just socializing like they always do. However, after listening
more to their conversations I realized that they were all just working and
helping each other with the assignments they were trying to complete. A lot of
the athletes had some of the same classes, from what I presumed, and they were
all just trying to make sure they got the best possible grade by asking others
for help. Even though I knew some of these individuals were on different teams,
I couldn't help but to feel a sense of teamwork going on in the midst of
socialize hall tonight.
