It's A Rivalry Thing, You Wouldn't Understand

Every year Las Cruces experiences the biggest football game in the city, the Mayfield Cruces game. This game is between Las Cruces High School and Mayfield High School in Las Cruces. This rivalry has existed ever since Mayfield was built and students switched from Cruces High to Mayfield High. Back in the day, Las Cruces High School was the only high school that existed. But when Las Cruces slowly started to grow, a new school had to be built on the opposite side of the city. This game is so big, so many people go, that the city has to have it at Aggie Memorial Stadium, and every now and then, sometimes it sells out. This year I attended and I was surprised to see that the Las Cruces High School side was not as full as it has been in the past. I think it was because the LCHS Football team wasn’t as good as it was last year. Anyways, being a graduate from Mayfield, it is a must to go to this game every year.

I think this rivalry is the 2nd biggest in the nation for high school football. And mostly anyone who attends LCHS or MHS will say they don’t understand why people would go to any other school other than one of these two, because of the rivalry. Going to high school at one of these schools, you immediately have an advantage of this rivalry. It is both enjoyable and also the amount of hatred leading up to the game grows through the week, every single year. My 2 best friends went to LCHS and I love them. But the week of the game, I felt full hatred towards them and the same with them towards me. This game is as serious as they come and the winning school earns bragging rights for one full year, which is nothing to joke about.

For the past few years, and back when I was in high school, Mayfield has choked at this game every single year. We will be ahead for the first half of the game, and then the second half LCHS will bring their game, and MHS will choke. But this year, MHS won 28-27, almost choking, but still we won, and we won our bragging rights. I was surprised we barely won; however because like I said before, LCHS football team is not that good this year, but MHS is. This game and the rivalry are traditions that I think will never die. Las Cruces doesn’t have much, but this rivalry thing is huge and something we can call our own.
