Players and Observations

It was another early afternoon game. It was extremely hot like usual.  I came into the complex and sat in the middle of the stands.  Behind me sat many adults ranging between 35 and 65.  All of them sitting behind me were all holding large umbrellas to block them from the sun.

To my right sat a group of college students who seem to be from the middle east because i recognized a couple of them from class.  I also noticed behind the middle eastern students sat a group of basketball, baseball and football players that played for NMSU that sat to the right.  Many of those players from various sports were all guys and they were each carrying a sign with a different players name and number.  I would expect the individual carrying the the player sign would cheer for that particular player.  However, this did not hold true.  Most of them were silent and usual placed the sign faced down on the bench.  Actually people around them seem to cheer more for the players on the field.  However they did pay rather close attention to the game because several times during the game i overheard there group talking about what was the good things they were doing as a team and also what bad things they were doing on defense which was causing them to lose.

Some general observation I made going to several of these games.

  • Later in the afternoon the game is played more people show up.
  • They have the highest attendance for games on Fridays compared to Weekend games.
  • The crowd is louder when the whole basketball team, baseball team or any other NMSu sport team show up for the game.
  • The crowd is also louder when Pistol Pete shows up for the games compared to times he doesn't show up.
  • The crowd also appears to be louder when gifts are offered.
  • Little kids, middle school students, and high school girls don't seem to pay attention to much of the games.
  • Female adults spend a lot of time on there phone or talking with one another during the game compared to there male counterparts.
  • The college students are usually the quietist group within the stand unless there is another sports team present than they are the loudest by far.
