It's Halloween night and I could not be more excited for what the venue will have to offer. I put together my costume and wait for 9 o'clock to roll around. It's go time.
A little breeze for the night should be nice as I expect the venue to be illegally over capacity with adults in costumes. I am there on time as usual. My costume allowed me to strike a conversation with Cade, the promoter, as he asked what I was supposed to be. I responded and asked him the same question. He was dressed in all black and then explained that he was waiting for his bandmate to bring him a wig and makeup. Very cool. Even the responsible promoter is getting festive tonight.
As I suspected, not many folks are here yet, but I do see Mexican Wrestlers, a giant man baby, and a cowboy loitering around the parking lot and indoors. Tonights show is full of locals playing covers of popular classics. Some of which included "The Strokes", "Fright Eyes", and "Janes Addiction".
More and more folks arrive. The band members, guests, friends, and family. Suddenly an uncontrollable wave of excitement washes over me and before I know it, I am standing shoulder to shoulder with "Mia Wallace" a peacock, and several serial killers. Man is it packed in here. The fact that so many grown adults came here dressed and ready makes my day. I run into familiar faces and some classmates. Those who weren't hiding beneath a mask of course. Honestly, who wasn't here tonight. The sea of people flooding the parking lot and venue was impossible to push through.
Many expressed themselves and behaved in such silly ways. I observed lots of dancing and laughter tonight. The promoters seemed more relaxed than usual despite the hundreds of people around. An excited black pug always made an appearance at tonights show. I'd say he stole the audiences attention.
From outside the closed venue from time to time, I could hear the muffled sound of large groups of people singing along with every cover being played. It screamed joy and friday nights to me. Spotting specific actions was quite tough tonight as I am sure I missed a lot, but I think tonight was about being a part of the festivities instead of observing them. A show that turned out like this was much needed as this fieldsite has been kind of dead lately. It has returned with quite a bang.
