Week Nine
This was an exciting week all over
campus, for many different reasons. Human vs. Zombies was happening. Some
people were dressed up as zombies. They went full out with the hair and makeup.
Others were dressed in all black to blend in with the night. As I understand it
Human vs. Zombies is a massive game of tag. Zombies try to tag humans and “infect”
with the virus, while humans run around campus trying to find “the cure.” I
wondered what type of person would be interested in that type of game. Mostly
likely it is athletic nerds, Walking Dead fans, and people looking for friends.
It all seemed like great fun, as people ran passed yelling and laughing well
into the night. There was definitely a strategy to the game, and runners would
meet up and discuss their next move of attack. This activity was all over
campus, but I noticed that the duck pond was a big hot spot for the zombies to
gather and palaver about their next move. It seemed like a generally fun
activity and there were lots of participants.
This week was also the week of Halloween.
There were lots of folks walking around in costumes on Friday night. Halloween
is the one night every year that people can be whoever they want. It is a good
example of role play. People usually dress up as someone they want to be, or
something they look up to. It gives one a sense of what that person is like. On
Friday night people were pouring out from the dorms and nearby apartments. One group
in particular caught my interest. They were all dressed as Disney princesses,
even the boys in the group. There were probably about five or six of them.
Growing up, as children they probably enjoyed watching Disney movies. That’s probably
a reason they wanted to idolize these old characters. The group also seemed like they all had quirky
personalities. Especially the boys who were dressed up as Jasmine from Aladdin,
and the Little Mermaid. I wondered if that factored in to the reason that they
were wearing such costumes.
This was a week full of role play,
and acting. It was exciting to see what people do and what they admire. It is
like looking at a new side of them, through their costumes. It was also nice to
see that people never get too old to dress up, and play around.
