This
week in study hall at the Multon Center student athletes faced a less stressful
week in study hall, with mid terms coming to an end. But along with midterms
coming to an end, the beginnings of the end of the semester projects were
coming about. Students had to find groups, come up with project ideas, and
developing a concept, and also the football players as well as the student body
were coming off of a bi-week in football to play there first home game in 3
weeks. And also with football season slowly coming to an end and basketball
season getting ready to start students as well as student athletes had the
basketball scrimmage to look forward to for the men’s basketball team.
With
the semester finally coming closer to an end with less than two months of
school left, and less than a month until thanksgiving breaks, student athletes
began to buckle down more so in their studies. Students as well as student athletes
were now locked into their classes and could no longer drop their classes, and
for student athletes in order to maintain scholarships and be able to
participate in athletic practices and games they have to pass at least 12
credit hours, according to the NCAA. And for some of the athletic teams passing
12 credit hours is not enough for some of the coaches, so right now this was a
time of either improvement on grades or maintaining grades for many people.
For
many of the student athletes in study hall the trends of continuing to separate
by sport and team affiliation continued to remain true, but for many others
sport and gender started to become less of an issue in study hall at the Multon
Center for many of the student athletes. Student athletes began to rely on each
other regardless of sport affiliation in terms of who had the same major and
who was better at a particular subject, because like I said before time is of
the essence and improving and maintaining grades is of the up most importance. Along
with this trend the trend of music, as well as food in study hall to help
motivate the student athletes in completing their homework as well as their
hours continues in study hall.
With
students becoming more used to what is expected of them in study hall, the
study hall monitors responsibilities began to decline, due to the fact that
student athletes knew what was expected of them. With this being so the
monitors of study hall could focus more so on their work while holding down the
fort at study hall in the Multon Center. With less than 8 weeks of study hall
student athletes were almost complete with their first semester of study hall
for this school year, and for many of the student athletes this could possibly
be the last semester of study hall that they ever had to do in the history of
their student athlete career here as undergraduates at New Mexico State
University.
